Malecki Brooks Ford Law Group, LLC is proud to roll out a new communication highlighting the accomplishments of our clients. This is the first Roarlight.
Name: Alexandra Asrow, MD, FACEP
Specialty: Emergency Medicine
Currently: Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois, and the American College of Emergency Physicians Lead Ambassador to Italy.
Roar: With the cooperation of multiple hospitals and residency programs, Dr. Asrow founded an exchange program for Italian Emergency Medicine residents to come to Chicago to attend a month-long intensive rotation to help educate, inspire, and train future physicians, educators, and leaders in Italian Emergency Medicine. The program includes observational shifts in emergency departments of multiple hospitals of varying types with a variety of preceptors, learning about patient care, and working alongside residents, students, nurses, and other staff to learn more about the functionality of the US system. It also includes participation in weekly resident didactic conferences, intensive procedural and simulation lab sessions, and attendance at special programs locally and nationally. Finally, there are regular social gatherings, dinners, holidays, and exploration of the great city of Chicago that enrich the program on a personal level.
Dr. Asrow’s comments: “As the exchange, my colleagues and I regularly traveled to Italy to provide lectures, procedural training, and intensive simulation courses firsthand as well. It is the only program of its kind in the country. I felt this was the best way to share the 50 plus years of experience we have in Emergency Medicine in the US with the bright, capable, eager to learn Italian EM residents, and assist them to gain an accelerated pace to a well-developed, well respected specialty. During the first two plus years of the program, there have been 52 participants from all over Italy (with a waiting list each year), with incredible responses and feedback. Given that the specialty is still so new, this is a significant representation of the total number of EM residents from around the country. I have been told how inspiring it has been for so many, how it pushes them to keep working towards their goals without getting discouraged. It shows them what is possible, has really helped create an optimistic outlook amongst the young physicians, and gives a taste of what EM can and should be. It has also created deep, lifelong connections, and a continued support network for past participants as they develop their own careers. The philosophy of the program is for participants to not only learn the medicine, but also about how we teach and structure Emergency Medicine residencies.”
