Tips to Help Your Team Celebrate Compliance & Ethics Week

Practical ideas to build engagement, reinforce accountability, and strengthen your healthcare organization’s compliance culture.

Every November, organizations across the country observe Corporate Compliance & Ethics Week, an initiative created by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) to promote ethical practices, policy awareness, and organizational integrity. For healthcare entities—where compliance directly impacts patient safety, reimbursement, and reputation—this week is an opportunity to turn what’s often viewed as “regulatory” into something meaningful and empowering for staff.

If your organization hasn’t hosted a Compliance Week before—or if you’re ready to refresh your approach (or short on time)—here are several ways to design a week that is both educational and engaging. And don’t forget to listen to your team, what do they want to understand better, OR be recognized for?

1. Start with a Theme That Connects to Your Mission

Choose a theme that ties compliance to your core purpose. For healthcare organizations, this could be:

  • “Compliance in Care: Doing the Right Thing for Every Patient.”
  • “Protecting Privacy, Protecting Patients.”
  • “Integrity in Action: Every Role, Every Day.”

A clear, value-driven theme helps set the tone for the week and reinforces that compliance isn’t just a legal obligation—it’s part of patient care.

2. Kick Off with Leadership Visibility

A brief video or message from your CEO or Compliance Officer can go a long way in demonstrating top-down commitment. Have leadership share why compliance matters, what the organization is doing to stay ahead of regulatory changes, and how employees contribute to that success.

For example: A two-minute kickoff video where your CEO shares the theme of the week and why they personally value compliance, “Compliance protects not only our patients, but also the trust that makes everything we do possible.”

3. Engage Staff Through Interactive Learning—choose one that works for your theme

Instead of relying solely on long training modules, use short, high-impact activities that reinforce key compliance topics.

  • Daily quizzes on HIPAA, billing accuracy, or reporting protocols.
  • “Spot the Violation” scenarios, where employees identify compliance issues in everyday situations.
  • Quick case studies drawn from real-world enforcement actions.

Reward participation with small prizes or recognition in your company newsletter to keep engagement high.

4. Make It Fun—but Purposeful

Compliance Week doesn’t have to be dry. Add elements of friendly competition that build team spirit while reinforcing compliance goals.

  • Host a “Compliance Bingo” or trivia challenge with policy-related prompts.
  • Encourage teams to design a “Compliance Poster” that explains a rule or ethical value in their own creative way.
  • Offer a raffle or lunch reward for perfect quiz scores or full participation.

The goal is to make compliance memorable—so staff retain key lessons long after the weekends.

5. Connect Compliance to Patient Impact

Remind employees that compliance isn’t abstract—it protects patients and the organization’s mission. Share short stories or testimonials showing how proper documentation, privacy practices, or accurate billing have prevented issues or improved patient outcomes.

For example: Highlight a case where timely reporting prevented a breach, or where accurate documentation ensured a patient’s insurance coverage was preserved. Real stories humanize compliance and make it relevant to daily work.

6. Close the Week with Reflection and Recognition

End the week with gratitude and reflection.

  • Ask team members to answer anonymously: “What does compliance mean to you?”
  • Recognize departments or individuals who demonstrate integrity and accountability year-round.
  • Share a recap from leadership thanking everyone for participating and reinforcing ongoing compliance priorities.

Compliance & Ethics Week is more than a symbolic observance—it’s an opportunity to strengthen your organization’s culture from within. By combining education, recognition, and engagement, healthcare organizations can create a lasting sense of shared responsibility and pride around doing the right thing.

Whether your team is large or small, every effort to promote compliance awareness helps reduce risk, improve patient trust, and demonstrate that integrity truly is part of your care model.
